Abstract
Acidic opening of orthoacetates and orthobenzoates of different 4,6-diols of glucose and galactose gave a high yield mixt. of the resp. 4- and 6-O-monoesters. With the orthoacetate, the 6-O-acetyl derivs. were always in excess. With the orthobenzoates, the ratio between the two products was mainly detd. by the protecting groups used at O-2 and -3.
