My principal research interest relates to how a professional practice discipline, such as nursing, also a relatively new presence in Irish higher education, can fulfill its social mandate in respect of patient care and population health and contribute to both the professional and academic communities. This entails a focus on knowledge development, transmission, dissemination and translation to practice. This interest and that focus have led to work on partnership models of curriculum design and development, interdisciplinary and interprofessional education and leadership development. My research and leadership is concerned with working across disciplinary and professional boundaries to shape health systems to provide a quality service to citizens and to promote equity. This focus generates important questions about the content and level of undergraduate and graduate programmes and on the proper focus of research in interdisciplinary and intersectoral contexts. I am interested in questions concerning the attainment of a critical mass of research capacity in professional disciplines, leadership capacity in academia and the professions, interdisciplinary education and training, the reproduction of disciplines and succession planning.
I was Associate Investigator on the IRCHSS-funded UCD Irish Centre for Nursing and Midwifery History based at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems.
I was Project Manager for the HSE-funded study into the Clinical Leadership Needs of Nurses and Midwives in Ireland.
I am a researcher and board member at the National Centre for the Protection of Older People based at UCD.

|Knowledge differences make a difference! My philosophy is grounded in social realism and the disciplinary knowledge required for professional scholarship. Knowledge first and then the identification of the principles that govern its production, transmission and acquisition to ensure that the curriculum is designed to facilitate cumulative and integrative learning.|
|I encourage student learning by structuring and sequencing across and within teaching sessions so that key aims are clear and a continual oscillation takes place between abstract concepts and context-specific, real-world problems or situations. The facilitation of movement between the abstract and the concrete describes a 'semantic wave'; this is used to plan sessions, is made explicit to students and is set out as a clear expectation in assessment. This approach arises from the literature and empirical evidence from my doctoral and fellowship work; there is now a considerable body of evidence to suggest that it facilitates independent and active learning and critical thinking. More specifically, I use supported and supportive peer learning to teach curriculum design, strategic leadership and innovation in healthcare. As Dean (2010-2016), I supported the introduction of co-operative inquiry as a teaching and learning strategy in undergraduate modules to facilitate peer learning and small-group teaching. I introduced formal debates as a learning and assessment strategy in a core graduate nursing theory module and I designed two graduate modules that allow students to plan and implement a change project in their professional practice setting. These innovations arise from student and professional stakeholder feedback concerning the relevance and responsiveness of the curriculum as well as the findings of a research project that I project managed: the National Clinical Leadership Needs Analysis. Student feedback has been sought through conventional survey methods, focus groups and initiating debates in class on relevance of learning to personal and professional need. Grade distributions have been used to modify assessment components, introduce new assessment strategies and to adjust weightings; extern examiner feedback has been used to enhance the content and focus of modules.|
|As Head of Teaching and Learning (2007-2010) and Dean (2010-2016), I was involved in initiatives to enhance coherence within and across programmes: 1. Introduction of hub-and-spoke curricular model for Taught Graduate Programmes to rationalize module provision and ensure maximal student enrolment to fewer modules. 2. Governance structures to enhance the role of programme and stage co-ordinators and ensure coherence across modules, within and across stages and to ensure that modules shared by programmes meet the needs of all students on those programmes. 3. Assessment matrices to ensure that all module co-ordinators are aware of assessment types and timings for students on a given stage in a given semester to ensure an appropriate mix of assessment activity. 4. Introduction of a module co-ordinators' forum to share best practice, reduce overlap and repetition and to ensure appropriate sequencing and cumulation. 5. Introduction of new first-year 'Transitions: Engage for Success' module. 6. Gained UUPB approval for a number of derogations that restrict compensation for professionally critical modules and reconfigure clinical modules to streamline assessment and progression and facilitate better alignment of 'theory' and 'clinical' modules. 7. Engagement with the university's assesssment re-design project to reduce student assessment burden while ensuring learning outcomes are appropriately assessed with the secondary gain of reducing staff workload. 8. Review overall programme outcomes, informed by articulation of graduate attributes, regulatory body requirements and university levels framework, to articulate stage and module learning outcomes in a coherent and cumulative way. 9. I served as a member of the UCD Curriculum Review and Enhancement Steering Group (2015-2017).|
|I am a qualified teacher (RNT) with masters and doctoral degrees in education. Since commencing in UCD in 2000, I have attended numerous courses, workshops and events, including those relating to large and small-group teaching, assessment re-design, blended learning and the use of AV technology. I have used my more recent experiences as a student at the Open University Business School, the UCD Smurfit Graduate School of Business and the Harvard Kennedy School to inform the design and delivery of new modules and programmes, notably the MSc in Leading Healthcare Improvement and the module Creating Curriculum.|
|I have had three major leadership roles in teaching and learning in UCD: School Head of Teaching and Learning (2007-2010); UCD Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development (2009-2011); Head of School and Dean of Nursing (2010-2016). All these roles have provided considerable scope for innovation in the areas of enhancement of teaching and learning, curriculum development, assessment re-design, student engagement, critical thinking, graduate attributes, graduate teaching assistant training and disciplinary knowledge development in professional practice disciplines.|
